Wisconsin's ACT scores have dropped

LITTLE CHUTE (WFRV)

New information shows Wisconsin's ACT scores have dropped from 2nd best in the nation to 9th worst. According to one educator, this happened because all juniors are required to take the test.

"I got a 34 on the ACT," said Little Chute High School senior Thomas Hermsen.

"I got a 28, "said Hannah Rambo who is also a senior at Little Chute High School.

Rambo and Hermsen are headed to college. Good ACT scores and course work made this possible.

"I think most of the schools I applied to were focused on the ACT and they really wanted a certain score," said Thomas.

Both Thomas and Hannah have ACT test scores above the state average. However, that average score just dropped from 22.2 to 20. Dropping the state from the 2nd best in the nation to the 9th worst and that's tied with Kentucky.

The Little Chute Area School District says the drop was expected after the state ordered all 2014 - 2015 11th graders to take the ACT.

"It was a legislation decision for an accountability measure for federal reporting," said Kurt Krizan of Little Chute Area School District

Because all the 11th graders in the state were required to take the same test, it didn't matter if the student was in special education classes or advanced placement.

"The only students that don't take it are 1% of students that have extreme disabilities," said Krizan.

Now that this is the new standard, all the state high schools are looking for solutions to improve the test scores.

"Some research we've been looking at show through some ACT prep courses you can see an increase in your students scores," said Krizan.

Some universities like Lawrence don't even ask for ACT scores any more. They look at the over all student and what they have achieved in their education.
