WAUSAUKEE, Wis. (WFRV) - The Marinette County Sheriff's department says a Green Bay man is dead after he shot himself following a police chase.

Sheriff Jerry Sauve says the incident began Thursday afternoon on Highway 141, near Wausaukee.

He says the man fired a gunshot at a vehicle, then drove off recklessly in a black pickup. He was later spotted by a pair of sheriff's deputies who pursued him along highway 8 to the town of Hoodman.

During that portion of the chase, more shots were fired at the deputies and the man reportedly drove into oncoming traffic.  The deputies eventually lost the suspect's pickup on a side road.

After back up arrived, officers searched the area and found the suspect lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to his head.

"An extremely dangerous situation, miraculously nobody else was injured, no officers were injured, no citizens were injured," Sauve says. "He was driving recklessly, forcing vehicles off the road. We've got reports of a pedestrian who was almost hit. We'll have a lot of follow up work to do on this."

The investigation continues into the incident.
