New London church marks anniversary of tornado strike

-

NEW LONDON, Wis. (WFRV) - One year ago Thursday, a tornado touchdown in New London severely damaged Trinity Lutheran Church.

Thursday evening, the congregation gathered there to show church is much more than just a building.

One year ago, a tornado tore the roof off this sanctuary and demolished the fellowship hall, yet did little to damage the deep faith that holds this congregation together.

For Rev. William Sutliff the image of that day remains but it is the memories of how his congregation in the community responded that left the biggest impression.

"The tragedy that struck us really brought forth the generosity of God's people," Sutliff says.

Although the damage was extensive no lives were lost.

In April with construction finished, Trinity reopened a month ahead of schedule.

And one year later with music and prayer and even a little ice cream, a congregation remembers what was lost but more importantly what is yet to come.
