MILWAUKEE, Wis. (WFRV) - The Marquette University Law School has released its first poll of the 2014 election and it's showing some early indications of how tight the race will be between governor Scott Walker and Democratic challenger Mary Burke.

The poll found 47% of registered voters support governor walker and 41% support Mary Burke. Back in October, the poll found walker held a two percentage point lead over Burke.

Looking at other data in the poll, the latest numbers show that Governor Walker's approval rating has improved, sitting at 51%, up from 49% in October.

The poll also shows that more people think the state is now heading in the right direction.  This month's numbers show 54% of respondents think the state is moving in the right direction, up from 50% when that question was last asked, two years ago.
