Green Bay, WI (WFRV) -- A key downtown redevelopment project took the first step toward opening for business on Monday.

Schreiber Food employees start moving into a new multi-million dollar headquarters and technology center.

This afternoon Schreiber gave a media tour of the facilities.

It's a long awaited transformation for the downtown. And now a long vacant space will start coming to life next week.

That’s when Schreiber Food employees will start moving into the company's new 83 million dollar corporate headquarters and technology center.

The move is being done in stages and will be completed by August 12th.

That'll move all 500 workers, or partners as they're called, under one roof from six locations.

That's expected to help Schreiber's culinary team work better together and with customers in realistic kitchen settings.

The company says the new building will be a showcase for downtown.

Andrew Tobisch, Schreiber Foods Dir. Communications, “We wanted to be able to be sure that it did fit in with the rest of the architecture in downtown Green Bay. So we did our best to try and take all that into account and build a building and green space is there's something that Green Bay can be proud of."

Eric Scherwinski, Schreiber Foods, Corporate Chef, “We know that we're dealing with the same equipment and functions that our customers are, so that we can simulate their conditions even better. But I think the biggest piece was bringing all the minds together as one big family."

Most of Schreiber's new headquarters occupies the former site of Port Plaza Mall and Washington Commons.

That sat vacant after the last tenants left nearly a decade ago.
