APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) - Same-sex couples are looking forward to the benefits that come with legal marriage.

"In our file cabinet, we have a stack that thick of all the legal paperwork," explained Joshua Alan. "And now with, that one piece of paper, we're going to have this many more rights."

Joshua and Artie Alan plan on getting that piece of paper on Monday. They've applied for a marriage license, but the five-day waiting period is still in place at the Outagamie County Clerk's Office.

"It's nice to be able to be on the same playing field as opposite sex couples," Artie commented.

Especially when it comes to benefits. The Alan's are on the state's domestic partner registry. But that only affords about a quarter of the rights and protections as marriage and is only recognized in Wisconsin.

"We have power of attorney in place but there have been stories, unfortunately local stories," said Joshua. "where those power of attorney documents aren't honored for same-sex couples. Now, with a marriage license, there's no question."

The couple is looking forward to filing taxes together and getting on the same health insurance plan.

"Most opposite sex couples can say 'your insurance is a little more expensive so let's go with your cheaper insurance,'" said Artie. "Whereas we don't have that choice and now we do."

They are basic rights for others the Alan's have been waiting years for.

"It's finally a movement forward," added Artie.
