KAUKAUNA, Wis. (WFRV)-- Veterans in Kaukauna are concerned a proposed development site could overshadow a downtown memorial.

Developers in Kaukauna are looking to build a Kwik Trip and hotel on a vacant lot on Lawe Street but that’s not sitting well with some groups.

Arthur Hopfensperger, the Commander of the VFW Kaukauna said, “If they build what they’re talking about, a hotel and other items that would take away our area for parking.”

Events on Veterans Day and Memorial Day attract 200-300 people to “Ring of Honor” at Veteran's Memorial Park.

Members of the local VFW are worried these sites would deter visitors from coming.

“If they reduce the space there isn’t going to be a place to park plus the fact the way it’s set up right now with the lighting, it would overshadow our field of honor," Hopfensperger said.

The Kaukuana Mayor said they’re working to solve those problems.

Mayor Gene Rosin, said, “We’ve brought some of the veteran concerns to them.  They’re bending over backwards for them to remedy the concerns.”

The Planning Commission will hold a meeting Thursday at 4p.m.
