Vote on Appleton Library put on hold

- APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) - The future of a brand new library in Appleton has been put on hold after a common council vote Wednesday night.

It comes as the city was set to begin acquiring property for the new building.

The move came as a surprise, just moments after representatives for Trinity Lutheran Church publicly expressed interest in selling their property to the city.

This was a big moment for city officials because it was the first time the church had publicly stated that desire, essentially paving the way for the city to purchase its preferred site without necessarily using eminent domain.

A yes vote would have started the property acquisition phase for the city, but a handful of council members expressed concern over whether the property was the best fit, leading Alderman Jeff Jirschele to refer the move back to the finance committee.

"This site made the most sense to the folks of the friends of the Appleton public library and our director Colleen Rortvedt, and there are good reasons for that," Alderman Jirschele says, "but yet there's some uncertainty among some of the council members and among constituents so the idea is let's just step back, lets confirm our rational and then go forward."

The finance committee will review the proposal again next week before potentially sending it right back here to the full council.
