Nelson said contract talks entered the serious stages late Friday night and got completed right before the kickoff to the first training camp practice Saturday at 8:20 a.m. Nelson set career highs with 85 catches and 1,314 yards receiving.
"Jordy's a great player and a great ambassador for the organization," coach Mike McCarthy said after practice. "Everyone is excited about it. He's so consistent. He shows up each and every day and performs at a very high level. He's the ultimate pro."
The last time Nelson signed a deal with the Packers, many called it "team friendly." Recently, the understated wide receiver said it was more money than he could ever spend, but it says his new deal is about getting a market value contract.
"You want to be respected in this league," Nelson said after practice. "A lot of things get done the wrong way because people think we’re greedy, we should be playing this game for $100,000 or whatever. But it’s your value and it’s based off of business.
"You’re going to be paid what your value is to this team and in your business. It’s no different than any other job. If you see you’re being very productive, and someone else at a different job doing the same thing, but a different business doing the same thing, you’re going to want to be respected and that’s the only way you can be."
The news of the contract extension spread during practice, and players could be seen congratulating the well-liked and respected receiver. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers is definitely excited to see one of his favorite targets sticking around for awhile.
"It's fun to see guys like that who are incredible teammates, phenomenal players, good guys rewarded," said Rodgers. "That's what we've done around here. Guys who've gotten second and third contracts are the guys who for the most part have been raised up in the system, done things the right way, the Packer way, and got rewarded for it. It's fun to see Jordy sign for four more. I told him that's five for him, and I got six left, so we're going to have to do one more after that and stick around a little longer."
