Notre Dame finished off the regular season on a four-game losing streak... but this time of year, it's all about getting hot and getting on a roll.
“We didn't finish the way that we wanted to. We gave the kids three days off after our last game, we kinda needed to rejuvenate a little bit and refocus, “ said Head Coach Andy Conard.
“I don't know, we get in the playoffs and the engine starts going. We just find a way to win. I don't know what it is about the playoffs, I don't know what it is about this team but it’s just something about…I don't know, you win you keep playing, you lose you go home, and I don't think any of us are ready to go home,” said senior Joe Curtin.
The Tritons rallied from a 4-1, 6th inning deficit to defeat Freedom, 8-4 in the sectional finals last week. Overcoming that adversity has bred confidence.
“From our playoffs, like there's times where we could have gotten down but we stay in the game and keep going and just being resilient,” said senior Nick Zacharias.
Notre Dame will face Jefferson in the semi-finals this Wednesday. The Eagles recorded 8 no-hitters this season from three different pitchers so it's going to be a tall task, but the Tritons say it’s all about making that first contact.
“We got kinda one hit in that freedom game and then the flood gates opened,” explained Curtin.
“Hitting can be contagious sometimes and scoring runs can be and so it was like once we got the one big hit to get us going, I think everything else kind of fell into place,” said Conard.
The tritons are still searching for the school's first title in baseball. This is Notre Dame's 3rd trip to the state tournament in four years. There are six seniors on the roster that have helped build the program and they want to go out on top.
“The past four years, Notre Dame baseball's been doing really good and I think a state championship would kind of put ND baseball on the map so to speak and it would be pretty good to see that banner put up on our gym so that'd be a nice feeling. Definitely a first time for everything,” commented Curtin.
