If there is one theme we have consistently heard lately from players, coaches, fans, and even the latest Hall of Fame inductee from the Lombardi era Dave Robinson .....it's that Green Bay is the greatest place on earth for football. I'm sure Pittsburgh, New England, and even Chicago would vehemently disagree, but the reality is the Packers are the biggest show in town. Year round. And after over a full week and half of pretty much laying low, and out of the NFL training camp spotlight nationally, Mike McCarthy and his team will be somewhere near the top of the 24-hour news/sports spin cycle (which seems to be even less than that these days).
First off, it was reported last night at 9:30 pm, by Bob McGinn of the Journal Sentinel, that Bryan Bulaga could have a serious knee injury. By almost midnight, several media outlets had reported that he did have a torn ACL and was done for this season. Combine that with a photo of Vince Young taken at Austin Straubel airport last night, and life around the green and gold just got quite a bit more interesting. Graham Harrell and B.J. Coleman have been battling it out for the #2 QB job behind Aaron Rodgers, and following Coleman's performance during Saturday night's scrimmage, it's obvious the Packers staff doesn't have much confidence if the former MVP gets hurt. Young led Texas to the last college football national championship won by someone other than a team from the SEC, but his pro career has been nothing short of disappointing. Young has thrown for 46 TD's, 51 interceptions, just under 9,000 yards passing with a completion percentage of 57.9, while rushing for almost 1,500 yards and 12 TD's. Taking a chance on the talented but troubled QB isn't a gamble for the Packers, and it's obvious that Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy think that with some instructive coaching in the right environment, Young can be a reconstruction project in the short term. According to multiple reports, the Packers were impressed by his workout enough to offer him a 1 year contract, and time will tell which Vince Young we see on the football field.
