The Packers hit the field for the first time since their Saturday night scrimmage at Lambeau Field, and it was clear that the defense had a better day than the offense. Head Coach Mike McCarthy launched into several tirades over poor execution, and even called out veteran DL Ryan Pickett for being offsides. Most of the issues though were on the offensive side of the football with dropped passes, poorly thrown balls, and pre-snap penalties. In fact, it seemed like Aaron Rodgers and James Jones were the only two offensive players consistently on the same page, hooking up several times. Jermichael Finley also continued his strong camp with a great catch during the 2-minute drill for a touchdown in traffic. On defense, Jamari Lattimore had several big hits in this morning's workout.
Young looks like the player that everyone thought he would be coming out of college, and is very impressive in terms of stature. The big question is how fast he will pick up the system and truly challenge for the #2 QB job behind Aaron Rodgers. Young didn't do much today and basically handed off the football during any sort of team session, but he did zip a few footballs to WR's that made you see why Ted Thompson gave him a solid look. Young handled himself very well during his media interview in the lockerroom and only time will tell how he fits into the Packers long term agenda.
On the injury front, Jordy Nelson will be out after having a knee procedure and McCarthy said that he hopes for his return by the season opener against San Francisco. DE Datone Jones was out due to illness, while Randall Cobb had an issue with his bicep that limited him late in today's practice. RB Alex Green and TE Ryan Taylor both have knee issues and there is no timetable for either of their returns. Former Packer GM Ron Wolf was also in attendance at today's practice but kept a pretty low profile while perusing the sidelines.
The Packers return to Ray Nitschke Field at 8:20 a.m. on Wednesday. McCarthy said the instillation phase of camp wrapped up today, and they will turn the page toward game-planning for Arizona.
