During his first media session of training camp Wednesday, Finley repeated sayings like "just playing football," "getting better every day," and everything will take care of itself" when asked a variety of questions.
The Packers tight end seems to be making a conscious effort to not be outspoken or make any waves off the field this season and his head coach has noticed the difference.
"He's not in the media every day; that's a good thing," McCarthy said with a smile. "That was a joke. Jermichael loves football; he pours a lot into it. His offseason training outside of the building is top notch. He's where he needs to be. He's in a very good place. I think he's having a heck of a camp."
Finley may not be saying much, but his teammates have talked plenty about how impressive he's been on the field during camp.
"He's about 10 pounds heavier and there's not an ounce of fat on him," said Packers TE Ryan Taylor. "His focus has been incredible this year. He's been a different type of guy this year and it's been fun to watch him."
Matt Mulligan signed with the Packers this offseason as a free agent and had nothing but good things to say about his fellow tight end.
"I think he's been a great leader," Mulligan said. "He comes to work every day. He doesn't have ups and downs. He's very consistent and obviously his ability is through the roof."
Green Bay still has a ways to go to identify who will step up behind its top three wide receivers. If this is the year Finley has a breakout season, that void of finding another consistent pass-catcher may already be filled.
"I feel we're getting that 88 of old back," said WR James Jones. "Which is good because he's going to help us win games. He's going back to the basics and having some fun. When you got a good tight end working the middle of the field he can become a quarterbacks favorite target."
And as far as playing in a contract year, his goals for the season, or what he wants to improve, you can guess what the answer is going to be for now from Finley. It goes a little something like this...
"I'm just getting better every day. Just doing what I'm supposed to do. Doing it the right way," Finley says with a big smile.
