The Packers had Sunday off, following the team’s first preseason game in Tennessee. Monday’s padded practice started at noon and lasted 1:55 – it was closed to the public. Head Coach Mike McCarthy was pleased with his team’s production and energy:
"Exactly what we wanted. That's an in-season Wednesday practice. I thought it was a very good practice. I think the film's going to be good. You know, the situation, the two-minute stuff was competitive. Anytime you have extended drives like that, that's just great work to be working the bottom of that clock.”
Morgan Burnett (strained oblique) returned to action after missing several practices and not traveling to the first preseason game.
There were some new additions to the injury list: Jordy Nelson (did not dress out Saturday) sat out with a hamstring injury. McCarthy did not seem overly concerned and listed Nelson as day-to-day. (Nelson just signed a four-year extension. He missed 12 practices and three of the Packers preseason games last year after knee surgery, but played every game last season) Josh Boyd (rib), Davante Adams (wrist) and Joe Thomas (knee) all sat out with injuries suffered during the preseason game. Adams muffed two punts, fumbling the second one on Saturday, but he wasn’t making any excuses today, despite the terrible weather conditions in Nashville:
“My last year in college I was a backup punt returner so I caught a lot of punts in practice and I've been catching punts in practice here. I found out I was going to be catching them pretty late but I'm a receiver so I pride myself on having good hands. Obviously the weather wasn't in my favor for catching the ball but if coach has that much, if he thinks that highly of me to go back there and catch punts in weather like that I gotta step up and catch them.”
Adams also told us that he injured his wrist on the second muffed punt, but played the next series because of adrenaline and because it was his first NFL preseason game – he wasn’t going to let an injury stand in his way. Adams wouldn’t put a timetable on his return but told us he’s also day to day.
There were several scuffles in practice including. At one point Garth Gerhart and Mike Pennel threw some punches. Later Myles White and Tramon Williams got into it, each episode was broken up fairly quickly. McCarthy said at this point of training camp there’s some irritation facing the same guy every day. He dismissed it, saying it’s normal with a high tempo practice with lots of tackling.
Practice continues tomorrow with a 11:45 a.m. It is one of seven training camp practices remaining that is open to the public.
