Kicking off the final week of training camp, the Packers Sunday shells practice was closed to the public and lasted one hour and forty minutes. Media members are allowed in but are asked not to share too much detail, for example: scheme, substitutions, etc.
There are several training camp goals: 1. To cut your roster down to the 53-players most equipped to help your football team win. 2. Get your starters ready for week one. 3. Make it out of camp healthy.
The first round of roster cuts is already in effect – teams across the league have to narrow their roster down to 75 by Tuesday the 26th at 3:00 p.m. Today the Packers released: S Charles Clay, CB Antonio Denard, WR Chris Harper, LB Korey Jones, FB Ina Liaina, QB Chase Rettig and WR Gerrard Sheppard. (keep in mind some of these players may be put on the Packers 10-man practice squad).
Currently the Packers list 81 players on their camp roster (Jerel Worthy was traded). And TE Colt Lyerla is the only player on the IR. (IR and PUP list don’t count toward the 53-man roster). B.J. Raji, Jared Abbrederis, Don Barclay and J.C. Tretter will more than likely be added to the IR. Letroy Guion may be headed to the PUP list.
Brad Jones was a new non-participant – McCarthy said he suffered a quad injury and he doesn’t think Jones will be ready to go versus Kansas City this Thursday. Brandon Bostick did not participate again today but he was not on crutches, just had a sleeve on his leg. Casey Hayward did return after sitting out of practice last week and the preseason game against the Raiders.
The big news of the day were the injuries of B.J. Raji and J.C. Tretter. (both suffered Friday vs. Oakland). We reported on Saturday that Raji suffered a torn right biceps injury – McCarthy confirmed that and said Raji will have surgery soon. He also said the reason Tretter wasn’t at practice today was because he suffered a significant knee injury and will miss multiple weeks.
