Ashwaubenon Public Safety honors 17-year crossing guard

A local crossing guard was recognized for his nearly two-decades of service in the community.

Ashwaubenon, Wis.(WFRV) - A local crossing guard was recognized for his nearly two-decades of service in the community.

Richard LaPlant has been a crossing guard for the past 17 years in Ashwaubenon. Wednesday afternoon he put down his stop sign and hung up his vest and officially retired. LaPlant said he has many memories from those years, including guarding the same children from kindergarten through high school.

"There's a lot of nice people in the automobiles that drive by, the bus drivers blowing the horn," says LaPlant, "And a lot of waves from people over these 17 years which I really appreciate."

Early Wednesday morning, fire trucks, an ambulance and police from Ashwaubenon Public Safety gathered by his corner for an impromptu salute.
