Helping Hand: Oral hygiene

Oral health is noted as one of the biggest needs in the community.
(WFRV) - Oral health is noted as one of the biggest needs in the community.

Now, some very special ladies are helping improve the life and health of those less fortunate, one brush at a time. The Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Cross are assembling nearly 2,000 oral hygiene kits for people in need. "In those dental kits are going to be toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, and then a brochure, which lists all the resources where they can go to get some more help for their dental care," says Cinde Becker, director of pastoral care at St. Vincent and St. Mary's Hospital.

With a growing number of patients showing up in emergency departments with acute dental issues. "Maybe they're on medical assistance, or maybe they don't have any dental insurance, and maybe they just can't afford out-of-pocket payment," says Becker.

"I hope that they'll be able to use what we put together, and that they'll improve their life and health while using these," says Sr. Joanne Kinjerski of the Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Cross.

Kits are distributed to St. Vincent, Bellin, and St. Mary's Hospitals. The Sisters are focused on adults, raising community awareness, and equipping patients with resources to improve their oral health. "I hope that they take away that someone was grateful that God was good to them, and that they can share by sharing with the people less fortunate, or those that are in need of it," says Sr. Margaret Mary Halbach of the Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Cross.

The Sisters say it's all about showing compassion to those less fortunate.
