Packers Drop Preseason Opener to Titans 20-16

The Packers and Titans played the majority of the preseason opener in pouring rain in Nashville
(WFRV-TV) - The Packers dropped their preseason opener to the Titans 20-16 in a game played in torrential downpours in Nashville, Tennessee.

Before the game, Green Bay announced that offensive starters Aaron Rodgers, Eddie Lacy, and Jordy Nelson would be healthy inactives for the game.  That didn't stop the Packers offense from getting off to a quick start.

James Starks capped off an 8-play, 64 yard drive with a 20 yard rushing touchdown on Green Bay's first drive of the game.  Starks finished with a team-high six rushes for 49 yards and the score.

Rookie second-round pick Davante Adams had a rough night fielding punts.  Adams muffed to punts in the first quarter, the second one was recovered by the Titans and led to a quick Tennessee score.  After a missed extra point, Green Bay took a 7-6 lead into the half.

In the third quarter RB Rajion Neal put the Packers up 13-6 with a strong 12 yard touchdown run.  Charlie Whitehurt's 5 yard touchdown pass to Bishop Sankey tied the game at 13-13 heading into the 4th quarter.

Mason Crosby connected on a 32-yard field goal, but Jackie Battle scored the go-ahead touchdown with 5:02 left in the 4th quarter to give the Titans the lead for good.

Matt Flynn started at quarterback and went 5/10 for 49 yards.  Scott Tolzien was impressive in relief completing 8-of-12 passes for 124 yards.  Neither Flynn or Tolzien threw a touchdown or an interception.  Chase Rettig was the signal-called for the 4th quarter; he was 1/3 for 10 yards.

Receiver Chris Harper led the wideouts with two catches for 55 yards, but also had a few drops which has plagued him in training camp so far.

Jarrett Bush led the defense with 8 tackles and a sack.  Jumal Rolle finished with a pair of tackles and a strip sack of Zach Mettenberger that was recovered by Packers LB Jake Doughty in the 4th quarter.  LB Korey Jones also recorded an interception for the Packers in the 4th quarter off a tipped pass.

Green Bay returns to the practice field on Tuesday at 12 p.m.  They travel to St. Louis to take on the Rams next Saturday in the second week of the preseason.
