Training Camp Report 8-12

Notes from Packers Training Camp.

The tarps came down at Ray Nitschke Field as the Packers Tuesday practice was open to the public. The team practiced in shells for one hour and thirty-five minutes. The big news was the return of Jordy Nelson after sitting out several days (preseason game vs. Tennessee & Monday’s practice) with a hamstring injury. Mike McCarthy said he took it light with Nelson, being smart.

Defensive end Josh Boyd (ribs) also returned to practice after missing just one day.

Those who did not participate: Adams (wrist – MM: “I’m told it’s not a long-term deal), Lyerla (knee), R. Neal (knee), Thomas (knee), Barclay (knee), Guion (hamstring), Abbrederis (knee), Worthy (back).

Jeff Janis, who is still recovering from shingles, dropped his first pass today, but also made some difficult catches, including laying out for a deep ball from Aaron Rodgers – it’s the big plays that stick in your mind according to Mike McCarthy:

“Big play production is a huge part of being successful in the NFL so obviously big plays do carry a little more weight than making the everyday leverage play or doing what you’re supposed to be doing.” On Janis: “He had another big day today, looks good, hopefully we can get him cleared to play Saturday.”

Wide Receiver Myles White also had some drops, coupled with big plays as well. He’s been a standout all camp and is my sleeper to make the cut with a very deep and talented wide receiver unit. Tight End Ryan Taylor had a handful of catches – he hasn’t been overly productive this training camp so today was a big day for the special teams standout.

Aaron Rodgers talked today and says he expects to play about as much as he did last preseason – so not a lot. Here’s Rodgers on his camp goals:

“Like to stay healthy, that’s the goal. Last year we didn’t score a td in preseason so that’s my #2 goal – score a touchdown.”

Rodgers also joked about the team’s 3:00 kickoff time against St. Louis Saturday:

“It’s a little different, I kinda like night games. Don’t they have a baseball game or something that’s really important?.. big baseball town. We’re actually going to watch the game Friday night, should be fun.”

The Packers Wednesday practice is set for 11:45 a.m.
