Detours and Delays in Ashwaubenon

ASHWAUBENON, Wis. (WFRV) - Road construction and detours are an ongoing reality in Brown County thanks to the U.S. 41 reconstruction project.  No community knows that more than the village of Ashwaubenon. Starting Thursday, through May of next year, the ramp connecting eastbound HWY 172 to northbound U.S. 41 is shutting down - causing yet more traffic disruption within Ashwaubenon.

For the last few weeks in Ashwaubenon, heavy machinery and detour signs have caused the village president some angst.

"It will definitely impact the village," said Mike Aubinger, president of the village of Ashwaubenon.

First, the Hansen Road bridge over U.S. 41 shuts for a year shortly after Labor Day. Now a ramp connecting eastbound HWY 172 to northbound U.S. 41 closes until next May; both closures disrupting traffic patterns for drivers in Ashwaubenon.

"If you could dream up a traffic nightmare for a village president - this would be close," said Aubinger.

The reason? The U.S. 41 project. Construction is now moving into this busy area of the highway. Hansen Road bridge shutting so crews can tear it down and widen U.S. 41 traffic lanes below; eastbound HWY 172 to northbound 41 ramp closed so it too, can be rebuilt.

"There isn't an economical way to maintain traffic on it while we demolish and build new structures," said Kurt Peters, a project manager from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

For Hansen Road drivers are finding alternate routes. However, for the ramp closure, Aubinger is worried drivers may have some trouble, especially those from outside the area.

"It's going to create some confusion for people when they first come up," said Aubinger. "Some problems to get to certain locations, but we can overcome that."

Both think the construction may cause some traffic delays on Packers home games. Both urge fans to add in some extra travel time just in case. And if drivers still need help navigating the streets of Ashwaubenon, Aubinger says they'll find it.

"Our public safety department is very good, they knew it was going to happen," Aubinger said. "We'll be as friendly and as cordial as possible taking visitors and putting them in the right direction.

There is a signed detour in place to get to northbound U.S. 41 from eastbound HWY 172. Drivers should exit HWY 172 at Oneida Street; take Vanderperren Way to Holmgren Way - Holmgren north to Pilgrim Way -  Pilgrim to westbound HWY 172 back to northbound U.S. 41. Lots of details, but just follow the detour signs.
