Green Bay's Brown named Horizon League Player of the Week

40 point game earns Alec Brown Player of Week honors.
GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – For the second time during his senior campaign, Alec Brown (Winona, Minn.) had a game for the record books. For the second time, the milestone game led to Brown being named the Horizon League Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. The senior shared the award with Oakland’s Travis Bader.

Brown’s second weekly award of the season coupled with a trio of player of the week honors for junior guard Keifer Sykes (Chicago, Ill.) gives Green Bay five in seven weeks during the 2013-14 season. With five weekly awards, this year’s team has tied the 1995-96 Phoenix squad for most in program history.

On Saturday, Brown became just the third player in Green Bay history to score 40 or more points in a game, tallying 40 as the Phoenix topped Fairfield 74-58 at the Resch Center. Brown was the first player to score 40 in a game in 25 seasons, with Tony Bennett last doing so with 44 points against Wright State on Feb. 11, 1989. Ray Willis has the school record, scoring 45 against UW-Parkside on Feb. 9, 1971.

Earlier this season on Nov. 23, Brown had the third triple-double (15 points, 10 rebounds, 10 blocks) in school history and the first triple-double involving blocks in Horizon League history. He was named player of the week on Nov. 25.

Brown’s game featured 19 points in the first half and 21 in the second, and the 7-foot-1 senior made 12-of-17 shots from the field and 14-of-15 free throws. He knocked down both of his three-pointers and made his final nine shots overall after a 3-for-8 start.

During his performance, Brown set career highs for points, field goals (12), free throws made (14) and free throws attempted (15). The senior also added eight rebounds and three blocked shots, moving his career totals to 700 rebounds and 251 blocked shots.

With 1,388 career points in 107 games, Brown is three points from moving into Green Bay’s top-10 all-time and is tied for 69th in Horizon League history. He is the lone player in league history with more than 1,200 points, 600 rebounds and 200 blocked shots.

Green Bay returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 28, hosting St. Francis (Ill.) at the Resch Center at 1 p.m.
