March 9th High School Sports Xtra: NEW Lutheran Falls Short in D-5 Championship

The NEW Lutheran boys basketball team tasted defeat for the first time this season in the WIAA D-5 State Championship Game   

Randolph (27-2) won its membership-leading 10th State championship by defeating Green Bay N.E.W. Lutheran (28-1) 48-42 in the Division 5 title game Saturday.

Randolph scored the first nine points of the game, but the tide quickly turned with 14 unanswered points by Green Bay N.E.W. Lutheran, ignited by two 3-pointers by Travis Voigt,  to take a 14-9 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter began much as the same way as the first with a Randolph scoring spurt, putting the first six points on the board, but again, the Blazers came back to take the lead with six straight points and led heading into halftime 22-20.

Randolph had a 7-0 run in the third period to regain the lead and held a 33-31 advantage to start the fourth quarter. Kyle Roberts led the Rockets with 13 points and nine rebounds. Others in double figures were Jay Peters and Aaron Retzlaff with 12 and 11 points, respectively. The Blazers were led by Voigt with 14 points.
