"It is our policy, we think it's a good way to manage the NFL if you're able to retain your own players and we would very much like to do that. That includes Greg", Packers General Manager Ted Thompson said.
The veteran, who has struggled with injures the past two seasons, turns 30 in September. He'd be due just over 10 million this year if he gets tagged.
Jermichael Finley is another player who may not be with the PACK in 2013....
"I think Jermichael had probably the tale of two seasons, I thought in the first half he was kinda up and down, fought through the shoulder injury there and particularly played in the Houston game, which I didn't think he had any chance to play in that game. And then really in the second half I thought things really started clicking and he looked like his old self. So I was very pleased with the way he finished the year", said Head Coach Mike McCarthy.
But is "pleased" enough reason to retain him? Finley's due a $3 million dollar roster bonus on March 27th. If the Packers trade or release him they'd save over 8 million. Reports earlier in the week suggest Finley hasn't been approached by Green Bay about restructuring his contact and that the tight end isn't willing to take a pay cut.
If Finley's out, Andrew Quarless may be the guy to fill his void --- If he can get healthy! Quarless suffered a knee injury in December of 2011 and hasn't played in a game since....
"Andrew Quarless in a lot of ways in his time when he played is probably our most complete tight end", said McCarthy. "His ability to be the bigger tight end, to do some of those things.. I thought he really did a great job playing in the backfield, so I was counting on Andrew this past year. It's unfortunate where he's at with his injury but he's in town, he's in there working out every day, he's going through the rehab process and we're all excited to get him back on the field."
McCarthy says he hopes Quarless will be ready to go for OTAs.He's also hoping for a similar time-table for offensive tackle Derek Sherrod. The 2011 first round pick, who broke his right leg later that season in December, also missed last season in its entirety...
"He's there every day, I see him in the training room every single day so the surgery we feel is a success".
On the defensive side, after making huge contributions as a rookie, D-End Jerel Worthy tore his ACL in week 17.
"I mean I think training camp is definitely going to be a stretch just because of the timing of his injury and so once again he has to go through the process, the rehab process and get healthy".
Injuries and estimated time-tables to return, free agency, the salary cap... there's a lot that goes into building and molding a roster. The 2013 draft kicks off in 53 days, Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy will do the best they can fielding a team they believe can bring the Lombardi Trophy home.
