Phoenix Fall to LSU in First Round of the NCAA Tournament

The Green Bay Women's Basketball team came back from an 18-point second half deficit, but feel just short against LSU Sunday.
Sarah Eichler hit four 3-pointers and scored a game-high 22 points for No. 11 seed Green Bay, but it wasn't enough as the Phoenix fell to No. 6 seed LSU 75-71 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Sunday.

Green Bay, who went undefeated in the Horizon League and won the Conference Tournament, saw its 24-game winning streak snapped and finishes the season 29-3.  GB had won three straight first round games in the NCAA Tournament.

Adrian Ritchie added 16 points before fouling out with 3:05 left.  Jenny Gilbertson added 15 points, while Lydia Bauer poured in 11.  Green Bay used 3-point shooting to stay in the game against the much bigger LSU team.  The Phoenix were 12 of 28 from beyond the arc, and Bauer and Gilbertson each connected on three each.

The Tigers were much more efficient from downtown hitting on 9 of 14 three pointers.  Even against a lineup that featured a 6'5" and 6'4" pair of post players, the Phoenix pulled down 29 rebounds, same as LSU.  Both teams shot 49% from the field.

LSU's Adrienne Webb hit three 3's and a jumper early in the second half, leading an 18-5 run that put the Tigers on top by 17 points at 49-32 in the second half.

Green Bay used a 12-2 run to get back in the game, even after trailing by as many as 18 points in the final 20 minutes.  Megan Lukan's 3 with 49 seconds pulled the Phoenix within three points at 72-69, but LSU pulled down a critical offensive rebound after a misse3d shot on its next possession and the Tigers sealed the win with a pair of free throws near the end of the game.
