APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV)-- A serious crash on Highway 41 in Appleton shutdown a stretch of road for more than six hours today. Police say four people were injured in the 12 vehicle pileup. The crash caused the stretch of Hwy 41 near the Richmond Street ramp to be closed for more than six hours. "Right now, we're trying to determine what happened, if we had just one accident or several accidents that happened," said Sgt. Pat DeWall, Appleton Police. According to police, four people were taken to the hospital. One of them, a 47-year-old woman from Calumet Count, was airlifted to Theda Clark Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries. She's expected to recover. DeWall says investigators still don't know the cause of the crash, but they're working to find out. "We're looking at some of the physical evidence and then also just as important is going to be some of the witness statements, people who were involved and also other people that stopped after the accident, who weren't involved, what they told us as well," said DeWall. Police expect the investigation into the cause of the crash could take some time. Heather Sawaski reports.
