GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) - More than 50 skateboarders turned up today to celebrate " Go Skateboarding Day" at Joannes Skate Park.

The celebration, which was delayed back in June because of rain, coincided with the end of a three week summer program that offered kids the opportunity to build their own boards from the wheels up.

Friday was the last day of the summer program and the celebration gave them a chance to show off their work.

"Kind of a celebration of all the hard work they did," Jeremy Crees of the Green Bay Parks and Recreation Department says. "From actually forming the boards, carving the slope out of foam, layering them, designing the graphics. Everything from the basics all the way up."

"There was quite a few kids going into class that didn't know much about skate boarding," Sam Cole says. "So I helped them out. From the trucks and wheels and what they can put on their board to make it better."

Nearly 20 students around Green Bay participated in the "Design your own Skateboard" program.

Many say that Friday's event just furthers their new found love for the sport.
