In need of a hair cut? You can get a new ‘do and do good at the same time.
“We are giving 100 percent of the proceeds back. We do not make anything off of it, all for the fundraiser” explains owner of Hype Hair in Green Bay. The salon is helping to raise money for the local chapter of Wisconsin’s Down Syndrome Association.
“It means a lot just because its fun to come to a fundraiser and get a good deal or anything like that. But, it also shows acceptance. It shows that the community not only supports us and our kiddos but they also want our kiddos to be part of it” says Roxy Pryes, Board Member for the local chapter.
15 year old Preston Taylor will be rocking his fresh new hair style at the upcoming Down Syndrome Awareness Walk in Green Bay. He is the walk ambassador.
In addition to smaller events like the hair cut fundraiser, the walk is the major way the chapter gets its funding.
“With the money that we raise at the walk we are able to provide programming, education, grants for families who want things to do. Therapy services that maybe need some financial assistance” Casey Atkinson, Program Manager for the Down Syndrome Association of Wisconsin – Green Bay.
The group also offers support to families.
According to Pryes “It was really beneficial for me when he was first diagnosed to have that connection of community and other families that had gone through it”.
Atkinson adds “I wanted to pave a path for parents who were following in our footsteps. I wanted to be that driving force to let parents know it is going to be ok. Make things easy for people who are looking for resources”.
