Serving as a platoon leader with the 45th Division of the Thunderbirds – Army veteran Dana Gruetzmacher spent 22 months overseas during the Korean War.
Armed with his .50 caliber, Dana had to make sure the other three platoons in front of him were protected, as the Chinese tried to infiltrate the area about 30 miles from the DMZ.
Earning the Silver Star for his involvement with a battle, Dana would later serve as Commander for American Legion Post 538 for six years. The 88-year-old is now a lifetime member of both the post, and the local VFW.
