DNR Holds Spring Fish and Wildlife Hearings

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – The Department of Natural Resources held its Annual Spring Fish and Wildlife public hearings Monday evening.

The hearings took place simultaneously in all 72 counties state-wide.

Dozens of hunters and fishermen filed into Green Day Southwest High School, for a chance to voice their concerns on certain issues.

“It’s basically important for anybody that’s in Wisconsin, whether you hunt or fish or recreate, it’s just a way to keep in touch with what’s going on in the outdoors,” says Warden Supervisor, George Protogere.

At Monday night’s meeting, hot topics included changes to the areas where waterfowl hunting is allowed, and a citizen resolution to charge more to non-residents to hunt bear in Wisconsin.

“I guess I’d urge people to vote yes to increase that price. I don’t know if $35 is the number, $20, but I think it should be probably a little more than $3,” said one participant.

A topic that sparked numerous comments, was bear hunting with dogs in the portion of hunting Zone C, which is north of Highway 21.

“Conflicts between bear-dog handlers and private land owners was always a very contentious issue and Zone C which has areas of public land and in the central forest, some fairly large blocks, but generally speaking it’s a landscape dominated by private land and I would see no good coming of this,” said one participant.

Property owners with land near and in Zone C agreed.

“Dogs don’t know where they’re going when they run the parcels and we hear a lot of complaints from our neighbors and they complain all the time about the dogs, the trespassing, and it’s a big issue,” stated another participant.

Officials say that issues like this are exactly why these annual meetings are held.

“It’s a good way for the public to get their voices heard on what they think is best for the state,” says Protogere.

Hunters who weren’t able to attend the meeting can find details regarding new rules on the DNR website.
