HealthWatch: Exercise after pregnancy

News

Green Bay (WFRV) After  having a baby it’s hard to find time to exercise and get back in shape. But it can be done. And Aurora BayCare Medical Center’s Spooky Sprint is a great stepping stone into fitness with your kids.

Amanda Grovogel Bogacz is a runner, “I ran through both pregnancies.”

After her second child, Amanda was determined to get back in shape, “I would say getting back to running after having a baby is slow I have to have realistic expectations of what I can do,” said Amanda Grovogel Bogacz, mom.

It’s hard to find time with two little ones. So Amanda worked out on her own and with her children, “For example, last night I ran by myself but then came home and played soccer with my daughter or after a run I will ask my oldest daughter if she wants to go for a run with me,” explained Amanda.

Natasha Dorsey, a personal trainer at Aurora BayCare Sports Medicine says it’s important for new mother’s to work out, “Just getting your body back feeling good, feeling good about yourself, and getting that confidence back is just going to help you be a better mom overall.”

She says new moms should start gradually, “So they say to work out three days a week for about 30 minutes,” said Natasha Dorsey, personal trainer, Aurora BayCare Sports Medicine

And there are exercises you can do with your little ones, “Probably one of the easiest ways is get your baby in a stroller and get out of the house for ten, 20 minutes pushing them in the stroller,” said Dorsey “Just doing some body weight exercises at home you can use a carrier you can just do some have that baby in the carrier and do squats.”

One way to get back into running is to try a relatively short one.  The Aurora BayCare Spooky Sprint  offers a 1K family fun run along with a 5K and 10K and kids can join in the fun, “That 1K distance is perfect for their attention span, perfect for you just to get out get some fresh air,” said Dorsey.

This year if you register your stroller  riding buddy for 5 dollars, “They will receive a T-shirt and a ticket to Sweet Street,” said Dorsey.

Which will be going on the same day at Shopko Hall. One of Amanda’s goals is to run the 5K –  and then take on the Family Fun Run afterward, “i’m excited to see how my oldest will handle the fun run,” said Amanda.

Everyone is encouraged to wear costumes during the Spooky Sprint.

The Aurora BayCare Spooky Sprint is Saturday, October 28th in front of the Brown County Arena.  Sweet Street is at Shopko Hall.
