Eau Claire police report that a man is dead after an officer-involved shooting.
Deputies responded to the scene after Dispatch received a call of an adult man who was making homicidal and suicidal comments to another person.
After arriving, officers found the man standing outside and armed with a handgun. The man proceeded to threaten officers.
As officers attempted to calm the man, he retreated into his residence.
That’s when the Eau Claire Crisis Negotiations Team and Tactical Response Team were called in.
The Crisis Negotiations Team managed to contact the man over the phone and tried to talk to him for over two hours.
The man refused to cooperate and continued to make threatening comments towards officers.
Throughout the negotiation process, the man was seen at his window holding several different guns.
Then the man fired a shotgun through the window at officers.
With the situation escalated, an officer with Eau Claire Police Department shot the man, who was then pronounced dead at the scene.
That officer is credited with saving the lives of citizens and other officers.
The incident is being investigated by an outside law enforcement agency. The La Crosse Police Department is conducting interviews and handling evidence.
The officer involved is a Sergeant with eight years of service with the Eau Claire Police Department. They are on administrative assignment pending review of the case.
The man who was shot and killed is a 59-year-old Eau Claire resident. His name is withheld pending notification of family.
