UPDATE: 6-year-old hit, killed in Plainfield while waiting for school bus identified

PLAINFIELD, Wis. (WFRV) – The 6-year-old girl hit and killed while trying to board a school bus earlier this week has been identified.

The Tri-County School District says Maryanna Kranz was hit by a pickup truck on Highway 73 on Monday.

Her 4-year-old sister was also hit and injured. She is now recovering at home.

Authorities say 76-year-old Carl Mullenix was driving on the shoulder of the road when he struck the girls.

There is no word yet if charges will be filed against Mullenix.

Family of Wautoma boy battling cancer to donate $4,000 to family of girl hit, killed by school bus

WAUSHARA COUNTY, Wis. (WFRV) – The family of a Wautoma boy battling stage four cancer has decided to give the family of the sisters hit by a school bus earlier this week a nearly $3,000 check.

In January, Local 5 brought you the story of Miguel Duran and his fight with Rhabdomyosarcoma. After fundraising efforts, Duran was presented with a check for almost $3,000 to help with his care.

However, Duran and his family have decided to give that back to the grieving Waushara County family.

“They asked me if it would be okay to re-donate the money to the family who lost their daughter…and it just gave me goosebumps right away,” says Korryn Dean, a teacher in the Tri-County School District.

“Somebody else going through what we are going to be going through soon deserves to have that from their own community,” says Iris Duran, Miguel’s aunt.

The Duran family says they feel so grateful to have received the support of this community. They add they will be donating an extra $1,000 to help the family.

4-year-old girl released from medical care, driver that struck, killed 6-year-old identified

WAUSHARA COUNTY, Wis. (WFRV) – The Waushara County Sheriff’s Department tells Local 5 the 4-year-old that was struck by a car Monday has been released from medical care.

The sheriff has also identified the driver of the truck as 76-year-old Carl Mullenix.

Deputies say Mullenix was driving on the shoulder of the road when he struck and killed a six-year-girl, and injured her 4-year-old sibling while boarding a bus near Plainfield.

The stopped bus had its required lights on at the time of the incident.

Due to the age of the victim, authorities will not name the children.

This investigation is still ongoing.

Sibling of 6-year-old hit, killed while boarding bus released from medical care

PLAINFIELD, Wis. (WFRV) – The sibling of the 6-year-old girl who was hit and killed while trying to board a school bus in Waushara County has been released from medical care, according to the Tri-County School District.

On Monday morning, the school bus was reportedly stopped with its lights flashing when a vehicle traveling in the same direction hit the girl and her 4-year-old sister.

Now, the community is trying to absorb what happened.

“Somber, very quiet, some students have gone home. I think the majority that were on the bus have been picked up, gone home,” says Korryn Dean, a 5th/6th grade teacher with the school district, “When something happens in this community, everybody sticks together.”

Authorities say other students were aboard the bus at the time of the incident.

6-year-old hit, killed while boarding school bus in Plainfield, 4-year-old sibling in hospital

MONDAY 2/10/2020 9:28 a.m.

PLAINFIELD, Wis. (WFRV) – A child has reportedly been killed after being struck by a vehicle while waiting for a stopped school bus Monday morning in Waushara County.

Tri-County School District Administrator Anthony Marinack tells Local 5 the incident happened around 7:15 a.m. southeast of Plainfield along Highway 73.

The school bus was reportedly stopped and another vehicle traveling in the same direction as the bus hit two people.

The child, a 6-year-old girl, was killed, according to Marinack. The child’s 4-year-old sibling is reportedly in the hospital for evaluation.

Authorities say other students were aboard the bus at the time of the incident.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation says Highway 73 is closed in both directions between 10th Avenue and 11th Avenue to allow officials to investigate the crash.

Local 5 has reached out to the Wisconsin State Patrol for a statement and have not immediately responded to our calls.
