A World War II Combat Hero was honored Saturday on his 101st birthday.
Retired LT. COL. James “Maggie” Megellas was the guest of distinction at his 101st birthday open house at the Fond Du Lac American Legion Post 75 Memorial Clubhouse.
LT. Colonel Megellas is a World War II Combat Hero and the most decorated Officer in the history of the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division.
He has been a card-carrying member of Legion Post 75 in Fond Du Lac for 71 years which is named in his honor.
The U.S. Post Office in Fond Du Lac is also named in honor of Megellas.
Among his more than 20 Military medals are the distinguished service cross, two silver stars, two bronze stars and two purple hearts.
LT. COL. Megellas says he takes great pride is being a native of Fond Du Lac and visits his hometown whenever possible.
He and his wife Carol currently reside in Texas.
