KEWAUNEE, Wis. (AP) — A woman who left her baby alone in a bathtub before the 7-month-old drowned has been convicted in Kewaunee County of neglecting a child resulting in death.

Twenty-four-year-old Cheyanne Wierichs entered a no contest plea to the charge Thursday and two other drug counts were dropped.

According to a criminal complaint, Wierichs said her son found the baby drowning in the tub at an Algoma residence Feb. 9, 2021.

The complaint says Wierichs “admitted to watching YouTube while the children bathed for several minutes.” Sentencing is May 18.

ALGOMA, Wis. (WFRV) – Cheyanne Wierichs, an Algoma mother accused of drowning her 7-month-old child in a bathtub, had a preliminary hearing in Kewaunee County Court on a charge of Neglecting a Child resulting in death.

According to a court website, Wierichs pleaded not guilty. During the hearing, officials say the judge determined there was enough evidence and bound her over for trial.

Wierichs is ordered back in court on June 24 for a Pre-Trial Conference.

Court documents say the 23-year-old also pleaded not guilty to charges of possessing meth and drug paraphernalia.

KEWAUNEE, Wis. (AP) — The mother of a 7-month-old child who drowned in a bathtub has been charged in Kewaunee County with child neglect resulting in death.

A criminal complaint says 23-year-old Cheyanne Wierichs left her baby alone in the tub for “several minutes” at their Algoma home Feb. 9.

The complaint says Wierichs left the bathroom to connect her phone to a Bluetooth speaker and then listening to a song in its entirety before hearing splashing.

Wierichs is also charged with possessing methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

She is due in court for an initial appearance Thursday.

ORIGINAL: Algoma woman arrested in relation to child drowning incident

ALGOMA, Wis. (WFRV) – An Algoma woman was arrested on Monday in relation to an incident that resulted in a child drowning on February 9.

According to the Algoma Police Department, on Tuesday, police responded to the 400 block of Fourth Street in reference to a young child that had drowned.

Nearly a week later, police say their investigation into this incident has ended on February 15 with the arrest of 24-year-old Cheyanne Wierichs of Algoma.

Officials report Wierichs was booked into the Kewaunee County Jail and charged with Neglecting a Child resulting in death, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Possession of a Controlled Substance.
