Family First Ministries in Appleton is making sure community members aren’t missing out on the most important meal of the day with their Out of the Box food program.
Executive Director and Founder of Our of the Box Shantel Dupree says the goal is to serve those in need a hot breakfast in a warm, family environment.
Family First Ministries is a church located in downtown Appleton right behind the public library. Their mission is to be “A Church Beyond the Four Walls,” to go out and show love to those who need it most.
Pastor Pastor Alvin T. Dupree, Jr. often says, “See a need and meet a need,” which is the exact reason the Out of the Box Food Program was started. There was not a breakfast program in the Fox Cities and there was a need for it; therefore his wife, Shantel Dupree, gave birth to the program to meet that need.
The program serves 250 people each week and has served over 25,000 meals since it started in 2016. When the program first began, it served 100 people each week and that need has grown and continues to grow each year.
Organizers say they have seen an increase outside of those who live in the shelters. Their guests include low-income families, individuals who live alone, in addition to the homeless and shelter residents. It has also become more than a place to get breakfast, people come to sit and talk with others.
Out of the Box is in need of volunteers to help serve breakfast on Wednesday and Friday mornings from 6:00 – 11:00 a.m. Anyone ages 16+ can volunteer as often as they would like.
Family First Ministries welcomes groups of up to four volunteers. Volunteers may sign up by contacting the Family First Ministries office at (920) 903-1159 or by signing up online at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090f4eabac2aa4f49-outofthe.
In addition, the church is always accepting donations of breakfast items, kitchen supplies, and especially monetary donations. They are looking to expand how often they serve and add on a commercial kitchen.
Family First Ministries also has a holiday toy program called Project CHRISTmas. They collect toys for those in need that they hand out on Christmas Eve at the downtown Valley Transit bus station in Appleton.
