Numerous 911 calls were made to the Appleton Police Department Sunday morning, about a naked man who was stopping traffic in the northbound lanes of Highway 441. When police arrived, they found the 18 year old man still in the road, and still without clothing, near the off-ramp of Highway 441 to E. College Avenue. Police believed him to be experiencing excited delirium, a state of extreme mental and physiological excitement. Before he could be taken into custody, the man began to yell at officers to “shoot him”. Officers tased and handcuffed the man, but he continued to resist. He was transported by paramedics to a local hospital for treatment. He remains hospitalized.
A 22 year-old Appleton woman received minor injuries from the male during the incident. She stated she had stopped to call 911 when the man rushed her vehicle, opened her driver’s door and began to punch her. She was able to get her door closed when another motorist distracted the male party. The male party approached the other vehicle and began punching windows on the vehicle. The woman was shaken, but did not require immediate medical attention. No additional injuries were reported.
The Appleton Police Department was assisted by the Wisconsin State Patrol, Appleton Fire Department and Gold Cross. Officers are continuing the investigation and anticipate the referral of several charges on the man to the Outagamie County District Attorney’s Office at the conclusion of the investigation.
