APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) — Appleton Police hosted a flag raising ceremony May 13 to kick off National Police Week.

According to Concerns of Police Survivors, National Police Week honors the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers across the U.S.

During Police Week, between 25,000 and 40,000 attend services in Washington D.C. to honor the meaning of the week, according to the Fraternal Order of Police.

The Fraternal Order of Police states “In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week.”
