Appleton Ranked #1 in United States for Millennials Buying Homes, According to Housing Website

Local News

A recent ranking puts Appleton as the top city in the country for young people buying homes.

An article from Realtor.com claims more than half of mortgages issued last year in the Fox Cities were to millennials.

With an average home price of around $150,000 dollars, younger home buyers are finding affordable living, and the move-in-ready homes which they want.

When Dakota Kaufert, a resident in his 20s, was asked why he likes Appleton, “I dont know, just like how nice it looks downtown and you always have that lively feel, you see the cars.”

Those cars are not just bringing visitors, instead, they area bringing in people that are here to stay.

“When you look at what Appleton provides, it’s not surprising,” said Chad Doran, the Communications Coordinator for the city.

City officials say, the main focus for years has been attracting the younger generation into Appleton.

“There are great examples of bigger cities around the country that millennials want to move to, that young people want to be, and we think Appleton has all of those components,” said Doran.  “Lower cost of living, lower crime, but we provide all the amenities that they’re looking for.”

Doran acts as the social media guru for the city.  He says his focus has been using social media to get on the community level, and the younger residents have responded well.

“They’re engaging with us a lot which is exactly what we want, we’re there to answer their questions, we’re there to have a good time with them because we want people to realize that we’re here to have fun too, we want our community to be a fun place that people enjoy,” said Doran.

The article states: “We used Pew Research Center’s definition of millennials: those born between 1981 and 1996—who are now anywhere from 22 to the ripe old age of 36.Then we calculated the share of buyers within that age group who bought homes over the past 12 months in the 200 largest housing markets.
