Boating safety tips for National Boat Safety Week

Local News

This week is National Boating Safety Week, which leads into the unofficial start of boating season this weekend.  Thursday, Local 5 spoke with boating expert Wendy Townsend of Green Bay Sail & Paddle, who offered her three biggest tips on how to stay safe while having fun on the water.

“It’s really important to have a good plan when you get out on the water,” Townsend says. “Make sure and tell somebody where you’re going, and when you’re gonna be back, and check in with your person.”

Townsend also says it’s essential to wear a life jacket.

“One accident is one accident too many, and we understand that usually it’s due to not having a life jacket on,” she says.

Townsend also recommends taking a boating safety class.  She says courses are available online, and that her company teaches boating safety as well. You can learn more about Green Bay Sail & Paddle here.

“So, those are the three top tips,” she says, “make sure and get some education, make sure and wear your life jacket, and make sure and follow a plan with somebody before you get out there.”
