Brown County's First Honor Flight Welcomes Home More Than 70 Local Veterans

GREEN BAY, Wis. - More than 70 veterans along with former Packers players landed from their day trip to Washington DC just before 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Before they landed, Denmark Middle School's 8th grade band played some classic military tunes.

From what the veterans told Local 5 the trip was a wonderful experience and the welcome they got in D.C. and in Green Bay was the warm welcome they didn’t receive when they first came home from the war.

And whether they’d seen the memorials before or not, it was a touching trip.

"I have seen some of the memorials before, but I think seeing it with a group of soldiers or ex veterans, it was more impressive," says honor flight veteran Jim Meyers. "It’s just very impressive, it’s a wonderful country."

"You just wouldn’t believe it what it was all to see," says veteran Ralph Manz.  "They showed us every memorial, they took us through the whole city of D.C. and showed us all the buildings."

Local 5 talked to Troy Streckenbach and organizers from Green Bay’s VFW office who say since this honor flight was such a success, they hope to plan more for the future.
