On Thursday, the American Public Transportation Association is encouraging people across the country to dump the gas pump and ride public transportation for a day.
In Northeast Wisconsin, the city of Appleton and Valley Transit are partnering together for Dump the Pump Day, with Mayor Tim Hanna holding open office hours while riding a bus from 10 a.m. to noon. The goal of the initiative is to increase awareness of public transportation, highlighting it as a travel option that is environmentally friendly, cost effective, healthy, and a catalyst for economic growth.
“For every dollar we invest in public transportation nationally, we receive about a $4 return in our investment,” says Valley Transit General Manager Ron McDonald.
Public transit systems all over the country are doing activities and offering discounts and giveaways for Dump the Pump Day, so check your local transit system to see if they’re participating.
