Coast Guard searching Lake Erie for possible boater in distress

Local News

UPDATE: The search for the boat was suspended Monday at 8:00PM after unsuccessful attempts to locate the vessel.

The U.S. Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Airforce are searching western Lake Erie for a possible person in the water following a distress call Monday morning.

No other transmissions were made, and the Coast Guard was unable to hail the vessel.

At 10:45 a.m. on Monday, U.S. Coast Guard Sector Detroit received a transmission that was picked up by radio towers used to monitor Lake Erie.  The transmission appears to have been made by a child. It states “My papa fell in the water.  I need help.”

Sector Detroit launched a helicopter from Air Station Detroit, a response boat from Coast Guard Station Marblehead, Ohio, and requested long range air support from Canada’s Rescue Coordination Center in Trenton, Ontario.

Boaters on western Lake Erie are urged to keep an eye out for either an adult in the water or a child alone on a vessel.

Contact the Coast Guard at via VHF channel 16 or at (313) 568-9560 with any sightings or amplifying information you may have.
