Construction incident brings down phone services in parts of three counties

Local News

AT&T customers in three area counties were without phone service overnight following a construction incident — including Green Lake County’s 911 center.

Calls to 911 in Green Lake County were eventually redirected to Fond du Lac County, but officials told Local Five that reports of two separate traffic accidents were not able to reach the call center.

In both of those cases, callers were able to reach the appropriate agencies by calling the fire department directly.

Officials with the Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office say that while they’ve dealt with outages before — this was a unique case.

“We have plans in place concerning failures like this, but this was different because it involved multiple phone lines, including the 911 system,” Chief Deputy Mark Putzke said. “You bet we learned some things out of this that we’re going to implement in the future. But all is said and done, I think everything went as well as it could’ve.”

Some parts of Winnebago County are still without landline service, but the 911 Call Center there has not been effected. Anyone trying to reach the 911 Center there can do so by using a cell phone.
