Dealing With Frigid Temperatures at the NEW Zoo

Local News

The NEW Zoo closed to the public due to frigid temperatures Wednesday, but a small team of zookeepers reported to work to care for the animals bracing themselves against the cold.

Carmen Murach,Curator of Animals at the zoo says that some animals struggle in the cold more than others.

“There are a few animals who seem perfectly happy out there today,” she said.

That group includes species that originated in a colder climate, like red pandas, bison, and Japanese snow macaque.

Other animals, like ducks and lions, were brought inside to dodge the polar vortex.

Even the animals that weren’t brought inside have the option of waiting out the cold comfortably.

“A lot of the animals who are outdoors have access to heated buildings any time they want to go in,” Murach said.
