When the S.S. Badger’s dock was damaged during this past April’s blizzard, a lot of repairs were needed, with not much time until the ferry’s opening day.
Del Whitmire, the S.S. Badger’s Manitowoc office manager says that extensive repairs were underway until just hours before the ferry’s first run.
“It literally disintegrated our pavement and our driveway up to the ship,” Whitmire described to Local Five. “The asphalt literally cracked away on us, we had to get all that repaired. The city came together really quickly along with a couple of construction companies and we were able to put everything together just in the knick of time.”
According to Whitmire, those repairs finally came together at about six or seven p.m. Thursday, the night before the ferry’s season began.
“All this took place within a two week period,” he said. “So they really had to hustle to get everything done, and they really did a good job of coming together and getting it completed.”
The ferry came into port from Ludington Friday afternoon as scheduled, and left Manitowoc at 2 p.m.
It will run once a day until June 14th, which is when two-a-day trips will begin.
