April 27th is Drug Take Back Day, providing a safe, convenient and responsible means of disposal of medications.

The initiative also educates the community about the potential abuse and consequences of improper storage and disposal of medications.

Unused or expired medicine should never be flushed or poured down the drain. Water reclamation facilities are not designed to remove all of them and trace amounts of pharmaceuticals are showing up in rivers and lakes.

Here are some guidelines for if you are partaking in Drug Take Back Day:

What you can bring:

  • Prescriptions (controlled and non-controlled) and over-the-counter medications, ointments, patches, inhalers, non-aerosol sprays, creams, vials and pet medications.

What NOT to bring:

  • Illegal drugs, needles, acids, aerosol cans, bio-hazardous materials, personal care products, household hazardous waste, mercury thermometers or vape pens.
