First Ever Unity in Community Event Saturday, May 5 in Oshkosh

Local News

The city of Oshkosh is celebrating its growing diversity with the first ever Unity in Community event this Saturday, May 5 at the Leach Amphitheater.

Students with the Communities Program at Oshkosh North High School are helping to spread the word. Students Sean Stille, Taryn Leverance, and Danae Blabaum stopped by Local 5 This Morning Wednesday with details on the event aimed at bringing different cultures together Saturday.

Unity in the Community is a family-friendly event to highlight the incredible diversity in the City of Oshkosh.  The event will provide an opportunity for the community to come together to learn about our diversity through a series of children-friendly educational activities, entertainment, and delicious cultural food.  This event is brought to you by the City of Oshkosh.

“The mayor of Oshkosh and the District Attorney came and spoke to us about Unity in Community. They asked us to help with the awareness campaign and help volunteer. We decided to help with this project and do as much as we can to help with it,” Blabaum said.

“At the Unity in Community event, there will be seven different regions of the world displayed. There will be all sorts of different food samples from different countries and different things going on. There will be Hmong dancing, yodeling, different singing groups and much more,” Stille said.
Communities is helping with the awareness campaign of this project. This means students have been putting up posters around the city, going to elementary schools and telling them about this event, appearing on tv and the radio, posting on social media and even decorating rocks and hiding them everywhere.

“What we hope to accomplish through this event is to show how our community is very diverse. We want to tell people it’s ok to be different and to show all the diversity we have in Oshkosh. When we look at people and they are different than yourself we tend to distance yourself, we fear the unknown. We want to help show that is okay to be different,” Blabaum said.

Unity in Community is Saturday, May 5 at the Leach Amphitheater in Oshkosh from 1 – 3 p.m.

Communities is a community-based learning program at Oshkosh North which helps students learn literacy, social studies and leadership in a unique way while making an impact on our local, global or international community. Students collaborate with different businesses, organizations, and members of the community to help in their learning experience.
