Big news for Green Bay sports was made Saturday: Green Bay is getting another football team, but not one that uses a pigskin ball.

We're talking about what Americans call soccer and local soccer players are hoping to bring more attention to the sport in northeast Wisconsin.

"We think it’s going to be successful because of the passion the fans of Green Bay have for their sports teams," says Big Top Soccer managing director Peter Wilt. "And there’s a growing soccer fan base and the venue we play at, Capital Credit Union Park, is going to be amazing for soccer."

The new team will be playing its games at the newly built Capitol Credit Union Park which means they'll be sharing the field with the baseball team currently called the Bullfrogs.

Talent will be athletes from the Green Bay and surrounding area.

"To have something in the summer time for the college kids to up their game and for the city of Green Bay to be able to watch the best college players that we're able to bring out here, I think it’s going to be a lot of fun," says the team's future coach Brian Kamler.

Though some of the areas best players will be recruited they won't be paid to play.

Park managers say the games can bring in 4,000 attendees, but they're not worried about building a fan base despite Green Bay being a smaller area.

"I think the smaller number of people means it’s easier to cut through the clutter and to reach the fan base," says Wilt.

Soccer is often called the world's most loved sport.

And this coach is hoping it become's one of Green Bay's too.

"If you’ve noticed the last couple world cups, there’s been a lot of interest in the United States and I think there’s been a lot of interest with in the Green Bay area," says Kamler. "We go to different places and you see soccer games on and we’re hoping that you come out and enjoy a game in the shadows of Lambeau field. Just a different type of football."
