Last September, Lambeau Field played host to college football as Wisconsin took on LSU. Now confirmation that another opponent may travel here to again take on the Badgers. Local 5’s Kris Schuller spoke with local leaders about the possibility.
Soon after the success of the Wisconsin versus LSU football game at Lambeau last fall, many started wondering – will college football ever return again?
Well it appears it’s a distinct possibility based on comments from Packers President Mark Murphy.
“Hopeful that very soon we’ll be able to make an announcement,” said Murphy.
The news came Monday after the Packers shareholders meeting, when Murphy was asked about a report in the Chicago Tribune, stating Wisconsin and Notre Dame were working on a series of games, one at Soldier Field in Chicago, the other at Lambeau Field.
“Obviously I think a Notre Dame – Wisconsin game would be pretty special,” Murphy said.
Last fall when the Badgers hosted LSU both teams fans descended on the city. Brent Weycker, owner of Titletown Brewing Company, hosted the Badgers pep rally at Titletown. The event was a huge success.
“It was a great way to celebrate Green Bay, the LSU fans were awesome – I’ve got to think the Notre Dame fans are going to be just as great,” Weycker said.
“Last year showed that we can host two teams coming into the community,” said Brenda Krainik of the Green Bay Area Visitor & Convention Bureau.
Krainik says last years game drew thousands of LSU fans. She suspects Notre Dame’s loyal fan base would travel just as well.
“It’s something we can do and probably do better then anyone else,” said Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt.
And according to Schmitt – the answer to the question of will college football return again to Lambeau – is coming soon.
“I think everyone wants it and it’s just a matter of when the proper time is to announce it,” Schmitt said.
Wisconsin and Notre Dame have played 16 times before with the last game held in Madison in 1964.
