Last-second tips for filing taxes on Tax Day

Local News

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – Today is Tax Day and many Americans will either be done filing their taxes or rushing to the deadline to get them done.

While getting those taxes done is important, it’s just as critical to have them done correctly.

If you’ve left it until the last minute you’re not alone. As of Friday, the IRS reported as many as 50 million taxpayers still had not filed their tax returns.

If you need more time, there is the option of filing for an extension. Filing for an extension will give you more time to file but not more time to pay any tax owed.

It’s also important to file your return correctly. A few common mistakes the IRS recommends avoiding are:

– Missing or inaccurate social security numbers

– Misspelled names

– Math mistakes

– Forms not signed

– Errors in figuring tax credits and/or deductions

– Incorrect bank account numbers

– Electronic filing PIN errors

– Filing with an expired Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)

Your tax return will be considered “on time” if it’s addressed correctly and is postmarked by today’s date. To help relieve the tension, you can find your nearest United States Post Office right here.
